100 and 1 Gorilla: Experts place emphasis on viral debate

(KSWB) – This is a question that has been bothering humanity since dawn about 3-4 weeks ago. Who will win the battle between 100 men and a single gorilla?

Users on Facebook, Tiktok, Instagram and other platforms have theorized about the outcome of such a fight after questions resurfaced on social media in April 2025 (debate broke out in 2020 on the same topic as well.

Popular online personalities, celebrities, and even politicians are getting heavy.

But of course, there is no way to get a true answer without any real matchups, so the argument will never be resolved. But some experts are willing to give their ideas.

Social media thought experiments have split the internet. Will 100 men win a hypothetical battle with gorillas? (Getty Images)

Tara Stoinski, president, CEO, CEO and chief science officer of Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund, told several news outlets that despite Gorilla’s physical advantages, there is a high chance that humans will ultimately win.

“The male gorilla is in his size and strength, 400 pounds of pure muscles, incredible jaw strength, and a very intimidating attitude,” Stoinsky wrote on Yahoo! I spoke to. news. “But in this case, I think it’s a game of numbers. Since 100 men come after one gorilla, they have many strategies that can be used to wear and tire the gorillas. They can adjust their behavior.

“He’s probably going to take a lot of people in the fight. They won’t go unharmed,” added Stoinsky. “I think numbers just work in the human advantage.”

As part of a social media trend, students deliberately short-circuit school laptops

Shannon McFarlin, professor of anthropology at George Washington University and senior science director at the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund, told ABC News about the same thing.

“I think you’ll be seduced at first by saying that the gorillas will win,” McFarlin said, adding that Silverback, in particular, “will bring a lot of power to that fight.”

“I think it really comes down to a huge number here. Don’t get me wrong. I think there are some very unlucky people in this battle. But if humans are strategic and are approaching in turn or in gorillas, unfortunately, the gorillas are pretty exhausted and the ultimate human will win that battle.”

But while this question is actually fun to discuss, experts, and many other animal lovers, say we should really focus on gorilla conservation.

“Gorillas are incredibly endangered species,” Matt McKim, director of animal care at Sacramento Zoo, told Nextstar KSWB. “With Zoos, there are many people working within conservation organizations to ensure that Gorillas and humans can coexist rather than decide who will win the battle.”

McKim said he wanted to avoid human/gorilla altercations entirely, and recommended that anyone interested in visiting gorilladoctor.org instead get a closer look at conservation efforts.

Robert Irwin, Zookeeper and son of the late Steve Irwin, shared similar feelings on Tiktok.

“How many people do we need to save the gorillas? That’s a question we should ask,” he said. “Because there aren’t many of them left.”
