One suspect who was stolen from a Ventura County liquor store was arrested at a Sacramento residence later last month, and authorities are still searching for at least one other person.
According to the Simi Valley Police Department, the theft occurred on May 13th at a liquor store in the 2500 block of Sycamore Drive in Simi Valley.
“The incident occurred after the shopkeeper returned from a supply trip to a wholesaler in the San Fernando Valley, temporarily leaving two vehicles behind the business,” SVPD said in a media release issued Tuesday. “Survey footage showed two suspects stealing boxes from both vehicles… about $10,000 worth of cigarettes were stolen.”

After stealing the cigarette, the suspect escaped in a grey Mitsubishi SUV without a license plate. However, through “hard work investigative work,” the Simi Valley police were able to obtain plate numbers before being removed to commit a crime.
In collaboration with the California Highway Patrol, authorities have used license plate recognition technology to discover that the SUV is rentals from AVIS and linked to residents living in Sacramento, SVPD said.
Suspect Jadan Gabriel Burns was eventually identified after investigators reviewed further surveillance footage, analyzed social media activities and used license plate reading data.
“Barnes was seen wearing clothes that matched those observed in crime scene surveillance footage,” police said.
Thanks to the help of the CHP’s Sacramento and Ventura County Auto Theft Task Force, the vehicle was eventually located in his home in Sacramento, and a surveillance operation confirmed Burns’ involvement in the theft.

Along with officials from the CHP and Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office, detectives from Simi Valley served as a search warrant in the 1300 block of Shadowglen Road, Sacramento on May 22. The evidence, 24-year-old Barnes, was found, arrested and recovered during the search, led to him further crimes.
Detectives are seeking accusations against Burns of vehicle robbery, grand theft and conspiracy.
Additional suspects are still being identified as the investigation continues.
