At least three people were killed and 14 were injured in a mass shooting in a desert city park in Las Cruces, New Mexico, police said Saturday.
Police and hospital officials say gunshot victims between the ages of 16 and 36 were sent to all three local hospitals and the University Medical Center at the Community Trauma Center. Five of the six patients who arrived at Las Luces Memorial Medical Center by ambulance and private vehicle at the Memorial Medical Center in Las Luces, according to Andrew Cummins, director of marketing and communications.
Police said two 19-year-old men and a 16-year-old boy died. Their names and the other victims’ names had not been released yet.
Police had asked bystanders to share videos and other tips as they continued to search for suspects and suspects in the attack. The attack occurred around 10pm on Friday at the city’s Young Park, a music and recreation venue. A press conference was scheduled for the second half of Saturday.
In a Saturday Instagram post, Councillor Las Cruces and Mayor Pro Tem Johana Bencomo expressed their sadness over the tragedy.
“Part of me wanted to write that this is something you don’t really think will happen in your city, but I feel that is not really true,” she writes. “To be honest, it feels like a nightmare to wait for such a tragedy to come true at any moment, but I never pray and hope that it will.”
Las Luces sits on the edge of the Chihuahua Desert along the Rio Grande River in southern New Mexico, about 41 miles (66 kilometers) north of the US-Mexican border.
The Lasluces Police Department said it is receiving assistance in investigations by New Mexico State Police, the Donaana County Sheriff’s Office, the FBI and the Department of Alcohol, as well as agents for cigarettes, firearms and explosives.
Local media reports say the department was still on the scene on Saturday, with areas around the park being closed to traffic.
