At least 15 people were killed after the roof of the Santo Domingo nightclub collapsed early Tuesday, according to Dominican Republic Police.
It is not clear why the roof of Jetset Night Club, a well-known club in the National District, collapsed.
Local media reported that a disaster occurred during a performance by Meringue singer Ruby Perez.
With 101 ambulance transfers to various hospitals and search and rescue efforts are underway, Emergency Management Business Director Juan Manuel Mendes said in an update on Instagram about 8am that the number of people hospitalized could be high as multiple people are transferred by ambulance at once.
“We’re still looking for people inside the tile rub. I think a lot of them are still alive. So the authorities with their team will not stop until they find the last person in that tile rub,” Mendes said in a video shared on the Dominican Republic’s National Police Instagram page.
Rubby Perez has been discovered and is in stable condition, singer manager Evelio Herrera said in an Instagram post.
“Let’s continue to pray that more people will continue to live,” Herrera added.
Photos of the scene by local media show the fallen roof of a building, crumbling cement walls, and piles of debris.
“Our city wakes up to the horrific tragedy that took place in Jetset’s nightclubs. My deepest sympathy is directed at families waiting for the news of their loved ones.”
She said the city’s National Disaster Response Committee is in operation.
