US immigration and customs enforcement agencies are said to be facing federal charges that 17 defendants allegedly re-entered the United States after being deported earlier, announced by US immigration and customs enforcement agencies on Friday.
According to law enforcement, some of the accused have been convicted of previous felony, including those for assault due to physical injury. One defendant was suspected of murder, and another was arrested on suspicion of assaulting with intent to rape.
Under federal law, individuals previously taken from the United States but found within the country could potentially be up to two years in federal prison. Previous felony convictions face up to 10 years’ sentences, but defendants were able to receive up to 20 years behind bars after aggravating their felony conviction.
Among the defendants is Marvin Campos Serna, a 29-year-old El Salvador citizen, who was arrested in West Hollywood on March 7th for allegedly assaulting him with intent to rape, false imprisonment, sodomy and trick him. He was previously convicted in 2014 of assault with physical injury. Campos is currently being charged with illegal re-entry and being found in the United States after removal.
ICE and Homeland Security Investigations are leading the investigation, and criminal cases are being charged by US lawyer assistants in the domestic security and immigration crimes section and the general crime section.
