Police said Friday that 19 adult cats were rescued in cages after living in filthy state in a stolen U-Haul truck in Monrovia.
According to Pasadena Humane, who treats stolen animals, in response to a call about the stolen vehicle on Friday, the stolen vehicle towed the truck and found a cat surrounded by feces, maggots and other debris.
Animal control officers and veterinarian staff were called to assess the animals and carry them to shelter.
It is unknown how long the cat took to the back of the truck.
The Pasadena Human veterinarian team has started a long process of examining each cat for injuries and illness, but most of them appear to be in healthy.
“Early intervention to prevent future crises is key, so it’s important for people to reach out before the situation is controlled,” Pasadena Human CEO Chris Ramon said in a statement.
Pasadena Humer has abandoned all cat and kitten adoption fees until Sunday to create space for rescued animals. Donations can be made on the Pasadena Humane website to cover the medical costs and recovery costs of rescued cats.
“By giving up the adoption fee, we hope to find a loving home for the current adoptable cat population and create space for those in need of our care,” Ramon said.
