Arkansas State Police are investigating double homicides after it was discovered that a man and woman died on a state park trail on Saturday.
Police were called to Devilsden State Park, about 25 miles south of Fayetteville, and the 43-year-old man and 41-year-old woman were found dead on a walking trail within the park before 3pm, authorities said in a news release.
Authorities said they were looking for a suspect called a white man wearing dark shorts, a dark tank top and weightlifting style gloves. He was reportedly seen driving a black four-door sedan, perhaps a Mazda, with license plates covered in electrical or duct tape.
The suspect may have finally seen him heading towards the park exit and travelled along State Highway 170 or State Highway 220.
The victim’s bodies had been sent to the Arkansas Crime Institute to determine the official cause and the method of death.
Anyone with information is encouraged to contact ASP Troop L at (479) 751-6663. The ASP is leading the investigation.
“We are heartbroken by today’s horrifying news from Devilsden State Park and are in close contact with the parks, heritage and tourism departments that work to arrest suspects,” Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders said in a statement. “We pray for the victims’ family and friends and know that law enforcement will not be on time until the perpetrators go to trial.”
The FBI’s Little Rock office said it had been in contact with Arkansas State Police and was “possessed to assist if necessary.”
