Almost 12 young children were found at Arcadia’s home after it was revealed that the children were all from surrogate mothers.
Curryfell, executive director of the Bioethics & Cultural Network’s nonprofit center, said he spoke to a Texan woman named Kera, one of the surrogate mothers who gave birth to the child for the Arcadia home. Kayla said she was told she would help a couple who are struggling to have a child, but was shocked when she found out that it wasn’t.
“It was her first time surrogate mother,” Fel said. “The baby she was born, she is now about to get custody. She was told by her parents that she was the only surrogate and that they had one child…”
Sylvia Chang and Guojun Shuan, listed as legal parents of Sylvia Chang and infant Kela, investigated the case of a two-month-old baby who was arrested by a local hospital calling the police and cared for with head injuries. Officers arrived at the couple’s Arcadia home and found 15 children, ranging from 2 months to 13 years old. Six more children connected to the couple were found in the care of family and friends.
Arcadia police said the home was established like a school. According to law enforcement, cameras seized from the facility show that they are being emotionally and physically abused by at least six nannies.
“There is no law for hiring multiple surrogate mothers at once,” Fell said. “… But as we can see, this case highlights the inherent dangers of commercial surrogate birth.”
Now, the toddler where Kayla was born is becoming foster parents. She is currently working on gaining custody of the baby.
It is unclear whether the remaining children in the household are foster parents.
