Three people from Colombia have been arrested in connection with a lottery scam against an older woman in Fontana.
The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said on Feb. 20, the 72-year-old woman was approached by two suspected women while shopping in Montclair.
“The suspect recently won a lottery jackpot, but forced the elderly victim to believe that he needed the victim’s assistance to raise money,” SBSD said at its release. “The suspect got the help of the victim and instructed her to drive her to the bank.”

Driving to the bank, the elderly victim withdraws $18,000 in cash from his bank account and tells the suspect he has another $2,000 at his Fontana residence.
“Before the two female suspects were greeted by additional suspects in the white Kia Sorrento, they told her they gave the victim a package and included some of the lottery prizes,” the SBSD release said. “When the victim opened the package, she realized it was filled with cut-out newspapers.”
When the victim called the authorities, the responding agent responded and quickly established that she was targeted for her age. One Deputy Deputy Conference was key in the development of an investigation lead that was handed over to the Fontana Sheriff Station Detective Bureau, which actively identified suspect Kia Sorrento.
On Tuesday, the Kia was stopped in Fullerton by officers from the Fullerton Police Department. A lawmaker at Fontana Station also responded, gaining custody of three individuals and vehicles.
The three individuals were identified as Rosalba Bernal Sanchez, age 60, Gyro Naranjo Lopez, age 58, Kevin Prieto Bernal, age 21. All three are said to be Colombian citizens by authorities. He was also found to be on felony probation for a Minnesota robbery, SBSD said.
Bernal-Sanchez was actively identified by the victim as one of two female suspects, but the identity of the other is unknown.

“The detectives have recovered a large amount of physical evidence linking the suspect to this investigation,” SBSD said, but they did not elaborate on the finding of accurate evidence. “The investigation is ongoing and detectives are working to identify the second female suspect.”
Authorities say the suspect is facing charges of elder abuse, fraud and theft through grand theft.
Detectives believe there are additional victims of these suspects and anyone with information about the case or who may have been victimized by these suspects should contact Fontana Sheriff’s Station at 909-356-6710.
