Minnesota Sen. Omar Fate, running for mayor of Minneapolis, could he become the next Zoran Mamdani?
Mamdani, a 33-year-old Ugandan-born state legislator from New York City, surprised the political world of its citizens last month by coming from behind to convince him of a Democratic mayoral appointment in the country’s most populous city.
With victory over former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and nine other candidates, Mamdani took a major step towards becoming New York City’s first Muslim and first millennial mayor.
Like Mamdani, Fate is a Muslim democratic socialist, 35 years old and a mate of Gen Y.

When Mamdani runs for mayor, he will promote an agenda that eliminates fares for taking New York City’s vast bus system, providing Cuny (no city tuition fees earned,” rent to local government housing, “free childcare” for children up to five years old, and establishing a government run grocery store.
Fate, the son of Somali immigrant parents who became the first Somali-American to be elected to the Minnesota Senate five years ago, promises to raise the city’s minimum wage, increase the supply of affordable housing, and elect mayor to fight police violence.

Republicans are not merciless about Mamdani and his leftist proposals. They have repeatedly tried to make him the face of the Democrats, but are trying to pin him to a vulnerable Democrat for reelection in the middle of next year.

On Saturday, Minneapolis Democrat Farmers Labour Party (the Minnesota Democrat’s name) will meet to decide whether to approve the city’s mayoral election. Insiders say the party will likely support or remain neutral with Fatae and not support the candidate.
There are other candidates supported by American Democrat Socialists (DSA). This is attracting attention among local government races across the country.
Among them is Denzel McCanbell of Michigan. He is running for Detroit City Council in District 7. McCamp Bell has a history of tackling issues such as voting rights.
In Ithaca in New York, student organizer Hannah Schbetts won the primary election representing the city’s ward.
