Police announced a $50,000 reward Wednesday in a year and a half investigation into the brutal murder of a 50-year-old man who burst into flames while sitting inside his car in Los Angeles’ Green Meadows area.
The incident, known as a murder by an investigator, took place around 1:30am on August 6, 2023.
Los Angeles police said another vehicle slowly approached, allowing the suspect to leave the victim and his vehicle, leaving an unknown accelerator, allowing the suspect to leave and throw.
“The suspect burned Buchanan before returning to the vehicle and fleeing the scene,” police said.
Clay Buchanan can be seen in photos posted on Gofundme.
Buchanan was taken to a local hospital, but was declared dead the same day.
Within days, Buchanan’s family said they hoped someone would come forward with information that would lead to his murderer.
“We want justice for him, we want the community to move forward,” said Larnent Murray of Nie, Buchanan. “Do the right thing.”
Murray added that her uncle is a “good soul” loved by everyone. “Everyone in our family loved him from the smallest child to the oldest nie to the oldest cousin,” she said.

More than a year later, detectives are unable to win a significant lead in Buchanan’s murder and are open to the public in search of a new lead by providing compensation for the identities or information that leads to the identities of the responsible person or person responsible, arrests and prosecutions.
“The goal is not only to resolve this murder, but to provide some justice to Clay Buchanan’s family and send a message that the community will not tolerate such meaningless violence,” police said.
