Union Rescue Mission held a “Just Help 1” 5K Run/Walking at Griffith Park on Saturday morning.
Saturday’s eighth annual edition, the event, will raise funds for individuals and families experiencing homelessness across LA, organizers said in a media release.
“Participants will run, walk and cheer as every step supports URM’s transformation program, shelters, diet and long-term recovery services for those in need,” said a URM official.
KTLA 5’s Erin Myers spoke to Mark Hood, CEO of Union Rescue Mission, just as 5K officially kicked off on Saturday morning.

“It’s just a great event… It’s not only raising awareness, but it’s going back to 86 cents of every dollar leading up to this event, helping people get off the street and get home,” Hood told KTLA. “It’s a very crisis… Los Angeles County has more homeless people than any other county in the US. That’s a big problem, but I’m very happy. [to say] We are the solution. ”
According to the 2024 Greater Los Angeles Homeless Count, the homeless population in LA County was estimated at 73,512. Data also shows that the city of Los Angeles’ homeless population is 45,252.
