Senate Republicans aim to speed up emergency military pay in case of government shutdown

FOX 1st: Two Senate Republicans are taking the lead on ensuring military personnel are paid during an expected partial government shutdown as Congress ticks closer to Saturday’s midnight deadline. .

Three Senate officials told Fox News Digital that Sen. Dan Sullivan (R-Alaska) has proposed a bill that would ensure all military services and the Coast Guard are paid in the event of a partial government shutdown. He admitted that he is leading the “hotline” effort.

The hotline is typically a procedure used by senators to pass procedural motions and relatively uncontroversial measures. This practice often results in bills and motions being passed with little or no public debate.

Sen. Sullivan is leading the effort to quickly pass a bill to protect military pay during the government shutdown.

Sullivan will take to the Senate floor to request unanimous consent to consider the bill live at 6 p.m.

The bill is titled the “Pay Our Troops Act.” Sens. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Ted Budd and Thom Tillis of North Carolina, Steve Daines of Montana, Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, and Marco Rubio and Rick of Florida. – Co-sponsored by Scott, Republican Sens. Tommy Tuberville of Alabama and Kevin Cramer of North Dakota. , Roger Wicker and Cindy Hyde-Smith of Mississippi State, Ted Cruz of Texas, Mike Rounds of South Dakota, and J.D. Vance of Ohio State.

Murkowski’s spokesperson said in a statement to Fox News Digital: “Senator Murkowski is adamant that Congressional politics should not cause our military to worry about its pay or its mission to keep the American people safe. is non-negotiable for her.”

A Republican official told Fox News Digital that he expects Senate Democrats to oppose the request, noting they have done so in the past.

The effort is once again spreading to the House, with Fox News Digital reporting that Rep. Jen Quiggans (R-Va.) is pushing for a vote on a version she introduced in the House.

“We’re clearly pushing for an open government, but we need to provide reassurance to our military as a backup plan,” Quiggans said, adding that he had spoken with House Republican leaders about a vote on the bill. .
