President-elect Trump on Sunday nominated Callista Gingrich, wife of former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, as one of his latest nominees for U.S. ambassador.
President Trump wrote in Truth Social that he chose Gingrich to be the U.S. ambassador to Switzerland, citing his experience as an ambassador in his first administration. Gingrich and other ambassador nominees must be approved by the U.S. Senate.
“Happily married to the great Newt Gingrich, Callista previously served with distinction as my Ambassador to the Holy See,” Trump’s post read. “During her tenure, Calista worked to promote and defend international religious freedom, combat human trafficking, and provide humanitarian assistance around the world.”
“Mr. Callista graduated summa cum laude from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, in 1988 with a Bachelor of Music degree,” the Republican leader added. “Congratulations!”

Trump later wrote that he had appointed Mauricio Claver-Carone as the U.S. special envoy for Latin America. The position of special envoy differs from that of ambassador in that it has a shorter term and is usually intended to carry out a specific mission.
In his announcement about Claver-Carone, President Trump referred to the “chaos and anarchy” at the U.S. southern border.
“The time has come to restore order in our hemisphere,” Trump wrote. “Mauricio knows this region and how to put America’s interests first.”

“He also knows the dire threats we face from mass illegal immigration and fentanyl,” he added. “As the State Department’s special envoy, Mauricio will work tirelessly to protect the American people.”
In his third post, President Trump nominated PayPal co-founder Ken Howley to be the Kingdom’s ambassador to Denmark. Mr. Howley previously served as the U.S. ambassador to Sweden, and Mr. Trump wrote that he had “served our people admirably” in that role.

“As co-founder of PayPal and the venture capital fund Founders Fund, Ken transformed American innovation and technology leadership into a global success story,” Trump said. “His experience will be invaluable in representing us abroad.
