(KRON) — A portion of the Santa Cruz Pier collapsed and is floating Monday, according to the National Weather Service. According to the Santa Cruz Police Department, the pier collapsed and three people fell into the water.
Two of them were rescued by lifeguards, and the third was rescued by himself.
The collapse occurred during a major swell expected to bring wave heights of up to 8 feet to parts of the Central Coast.

“You are risking your life and the lives of those trying to save you by going into or too close to the water,” the NWS said.
California Governor Gavin Newsom’s office said the governor had been briefed on the pier collapse due to heavy surf. The California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services is coordinating with local agencies and authorities.
Officials are scheduled to hold a press conference about the collapse at 2:15 p.m.
Monday’s collapse was reminiscent of an incident in the winter of 2023 when the Seacliff State Beach pier was irreparably destroyed by a severe winter storm.
