As first reported by Eater, Chulería El Morro is set to open in Los Angeles next spring. However, the beloved 89-year-old Mexico City churro shop isn’t the first to open in Southern California. El Morro opened an outpost in Costa Mesa’s Gonzalez Market last November, marking Churreria’s first foray into the United States.
In Los Angeles, El Morro is taking over the Patra Burger space in Echo Park and plans to open by the end of May 2025. The longtime burger joint will remain open in the building until the end of this year, then close for renovations. To the churro shop.
Known for its late-night hours, signature white-and-blue branding, and, of course, its seriously delicious churros, all 16 El Morro locations have glass windows that allow customers to see every step of the process in the creation of each one. You can see. Fritters sprinkled with sugar. The company’s CEO, Santiago Iriarte, said the choice to open in Echo Park was intentional. The neighborhood has long been home to a large Latino community, some of whom may be familiar with El Morro from trips to Mexico City. “We’re looking for a nostalgic core customer,” the third-generation owner told Eater.
Following LA, Iriarte is also considering further expansion into the US and other regions. Where shall we go next? Possibly Nevada and Texas.
El Morro Costa Mesa is located in Mercado Gonzalez at 2300 Harbor Blvd in Costa Mesa. The company’s only Thureria store in the U.S. is open daily from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.
