Former President Jimmy Carter, who died Sunday at the age of 100, is scheduled to lie in state in January in the Capitol Rotunda, Fox News reported.
Although a specific date has not yet been announced, President Biden said in a White House statement Sunday night that Carter’s funeral is scheduled for Jan. 9 at the Washington National Cathedral, marking that day as a national day of mourning. He said that he is doing so.
“I call on Americans to gather in their places of worship on this day to honor the memory of President James Earl Carter Jr. I call on you to participate in the rally and strictly abide by it,” the President said.
Biden also ordered all American flags to be flown at half-staff for the next 30 days.

The 39th president will be given state funerals at both the Georgia State Capitol and the U.S. Capitol before his state funeral in Washington, D.C., The New York Times reports.
Former Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid became the latest politician to lie in national politics in January 2022. There have been 12 U.S. presidents lying in national politics, starting with former President Abraham Lincoln and ending more recently with former President George H.W. Bush, who passed away in November 2018.

The Carter Center said several events will be held in honor of Carter in the coming days in Atlanta, Georgia and Washington, D.C.
“Final arrangements for President Carter’s state funeral, including the route of all public events and motorcades, have not yet been determined,” the center said.
The former president, who served as president from 1977 to 1981, will be buried privately in his hometown of Plains, Georgia. His death followed years of health problems, including cancer that had spread to his liver and brain. He entered hospice care in February 2023.
Mr. Carter outlived his wife of 77 years, Rosalynn Carter, who passed away in November 2023 at the age of 96. His death prompted an outpouring of sympathy from both sides of the political spectrum, with President-elect Trump writing, “Americans are in our debt.” [Carter] I am indebted to you for your gratitude. ”

In a statement released Sunday, the late president’s son Chip Carter called his father a “hero.”
“My father was a hero not only to me but to everyone who believes in peace, human rights and selfless love,” the statement read. “My brother, sister, and I shared him with the rest of the world through our common beliefs.”
“The world is our family because he brought people together. We thank you for honoring his memory by living out our shared beliefs.”
