Jimmy Carter’s lasting legacy in public health

FOX News Senior Medical Analyst Dr. Mark Siegel highlights the former president’s global commitment to public health education and the awareness he brought to melanoma and hospice care.

When it comes to Gallup’s Most Admired People list, Jimmy Carter ranks third in the top 10, behind the Rev. Billy Graham and Ronald Reagan.

According to Gallup, from 1946 to 2020, Carter was named to the list 29 times.

Carter, the 39th president of the United States, died on Sunday, December 29th at the age of 100. Although he served one term as president, he will also be remembered for his decades of humanitarian work.

“When Gallup retrospectively asked Americans to rate Carter’s presidency in June 2023, 57% said they approved of the job Carter was doing, while 36% disapproved.” is written on the blog. “His retrospective approval ratings rank at the bottom of all past presidents, better than Nixon and Trump but similar to George W. Bush and Bill Clinton.”

The association’s website says Carter is being recognized for his “decades of tireless work to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, advance democracy and human rights, and promote economic and social development.” It is said that he won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.

The Plains, Georgia, native worked on peace negotiations, campaigned for human rights, and did social work while President George W. Bush was planning war in Iraq in the fall of 2002.

“According to the Nobel Committee Chairman, Mr. Carter should have received the prize as early as 1978 for successfully brokering a peace agreement between Egypt and Israel,” the Nobel Prize website says. “As a former president, Carter conducted an aggressive peace and mediation campaign that at times seemed contrary to official U.S. policy.”

The Carter Center, which Mr. Carter founded with his wife Rosalynn in 1982, is a pioneer in election observation, having monitored at least 113 elections in Africa, Latin America, and Asia since 1989. In perhaps its most widely praised public health initiative, the organization recently announced that there were only 14 human cases of Guinea worm disease reported in all of 2021, the lowest number of cases of Guinea worm disease in Africa. It is the result of years of public health campaigns to improve access to drinking water.

Craig Shirley, a historian and biographer of President Reagan, said that because of Carter’s humanitarian work, he will be remembered as “one of the greatest former presidents of the 20th century.”

“We’re going to remember him fondly. He was a great former president for what he did at the Carter Center and the work he did across the country. His writings are outstanding. [as does] his philanthropy; Therefore, he goes down in history as a very good former president. ”
