President Biden on Monday signed an executive order shutting down all executive departments and agencies of the federal government on January 9, following the death of former President Jimmy Carter.

The closure, which Biden described as a “sign of respect” to the 39th president, will go into effect on the day of the late former president’s funeral.

A statement from the White House and Carter Center said Mr. Carter will be placed in state in state in the Rotunda of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., before being buried at the Washington National Cathedral.

Biden signed a proclamation Sunday declaring Jan. 9 a national day of mourning and ordered all American flags to be flown at half-staff for the next 30 days.

“I call on the American people to gather in their places of worship on that day to honor the memory of President James Earl Carter Jr.,” Biden said in a statement. “We call on people around the world who share our sorrow to join us in this solemn occasion.”

Carter, whose family ran a peanut farm in the Plains, Georgia, attended the Naval Academy and served in both the Atlantic and Pacific fleets.

He was subsequently elected to the state Senate, the 76th Governor of Georgia, and President of the United States, where he played a key role in the creation of modern Departments of Education and Energy, environmental protection efforts, and nuclear nonproliferation.

Democratic presidential candidate Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalynn share a moment on a campaign plane.

“As president, he understood that the government must be as good as the people, and that his faith in America is limitless and his hope for a common future,” according to a statement from the paper. “His faith in the people was limitless, just as his faith in the people was limitless,” the White House said. “Guided by an unwavering belief in the power of human goodness and the God-given dignity of every human being, he worked to broker peace, eradicate disease, house the homeless, and defend human rights, freedom, and democracy.” He has been active all over the world.”
