Roads will be even busier this week as Los Angeles Unified students return to school after a three-week winter break.
A new semester, a new academic year begins, and new changes occur.
It’s a big day for LAUSD’s more than 550,000 children, and there are some new policies in place for the new school year.
The most talked about issue is the ban on cell phones in the area. Students and teachers will receive training on the new rules starting today, and the policy will go into full effect on February 18th.
Children and youth are not allowed to use cell phones during school hours and must keep cell phones in their backpacks or school-provided storage containers.
That also applies to smart glasses and watches. Exceptions will be made in case of emergency or if the student has a medical problem.
The California Healthy Homework Act also went into effect on January 1st.
A new state law requires all school districts to develop evidence-based homework policies that focus on equitable learning and the needs of all children.
The state says these plans must be ready by the 2027-2028 school year.
