Newly sworn-in Sen. Bernie Moreno (R-Ohio) wants to get a bill to address the crisis at the southern border to President-elect Trump’s desk immediately and believes he can get enough votes in the chamber. .

“We need to make sure we actually do what we campaigned for,” he said in an interview on Fox News Digital, noting the rampant border crossings on the campaign trail. Ta.

The Ohio Republican lawmaker who unseated incumbent Democrat Sherrod Brown said voters frequently expressed concerns about “open borders and high prices,” and said the issues needed to be addressed immediately. Ta.

“We’re going to eliminate illegal immigration, we’re going to close our borders, we’re going to ensure security, we’re going to deport anyone who comes into this country illegally,” Moreno explained.

The hypothetical legislation would include “funding deportations, ensuring safe and secure borders, completing the wall, and improving technology.” “We will invest money to ensure that these deportation efforts are carried out at scale.”

“I am confident that it will happen soon,” the senator asserted. “We could also introduce the bill before President Trump just before he takes the oath of office.”

For a bill to pass the Senate outside of the budget reconciliation process, it would need to override the legislative filibuster and receive at least 60 votes in the procedural step. The Republican majority in the 119th Congress is only 53 votes, and Democratic votes are needed to advance the bill to break the filibuster.

“Look, this is not a Republican issue, so there should be 100 votes for that,” Moreno said. “It’s an American problem. We want Democrats to take a public stand against securing our borders because it’s outrageous.”

Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R.S., could bring these border measures to the floor for a vote, leaving Democratic senators on record on key Republican-led border legislation. This was a tactic frequently used by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D.N.Y.), who was planning several votes on abortion, contraception, and in vitro fertilization (IVF).

Moreno wants immediate votes on several border bills, but some legislation on illegal immigration is expected to be included in this year’s reconciliation bill, which also addresses tax cuts, energy and defense.

President Trump told Truth Social on Sunday that “lawmakers are beginning work on powerful legislation to take our country back and make it greater than ever.” “We must secure our borders, unleash America’s energy, and reinstate the largest Trump tax cut in history, but we will do it even better – no taxes on chips. Everything will be covered by tariffs, etc. ” from countries that have been taking advantage of the United States for years. ”

“Republicans must come together and quickly deliver these historic victories to the American people. Be smart, be tough, and get the bill to my desk for signing as soon as possible. Make America Great Again.” Let’s do it!”
