An 85-year-old woman and her family are appealing for help in identifying three women who attempted to break into their home in Colton on January 5th at approximately 2:15pm using a distraction.

Homeowner Margarita Martinez said she was sitting on her porch relaxing and enjoying a Sunday afternoon when a strange man approached her.

As seen in footage from Martinez’s Ring camera on his front porch, the unknown woman began asking the 85-year-old man questions such as, “Is anyone home?” or “Are you alone?”

The homeowner’s daughter told KTLA’s Shelby Nelson that Martinez told the woman her son was inside the home as a precaution.

Martinez’s daughter said, “One time, my mother said that she put her hand in her handbag, and that’s when she became worried.” “I thought she might have a weapon or something.”

But instead of picking up a weapon, the woman picked up her cell phone and asked Martinez to call her son, but Martinez refused.

The woman then continued asking for an aloe vera plant, persistently trying to get the 85-year-old man’s attention by telling him which plant she wanted.

As soon as she turned her back on Martinez, two more women emerged from behind the bushes and one of them hurried inside.

Martinez’s daughter elaborated, “I saw them waving and saying it was sunny, so I think they were signaling to each other.”

What the three women didn’t know was that Martinez’s daughter and her husband were inside the home.

“At that point I started screaming, get out of the house, get out of the house, and my husband started screaming too,” Martinez’s daughter said.

Martinez and her family called Colton police, and the three women quickly left.

Family members told KTLA it is unclear whether the three women were able to consume anything other than plants.

Martinez and her family said the incident had shaken their sense of security. In addition to calling Colton police, they also posted the surveillance footage on social media in hopes someone would recognize the three women.

“I hope they get arrested so this doesn’t happen to anyone else,” Martinez’s daughter said.

In addition to the investigation by Colton police, Chino police told KTLA they are also investigating a group of similar-looking women who matched the description of the suspect in Martinez’s case who broke into a home on Dec. 18. spoke.

Any witnesses or anyone with information that may help solve this case is encouraged to contact police.
