A state of emergency remains in effect for the city and county of Los Angeles on Wednesday as at least three fires continue to burn out of control in the region, fueled by destructive winds. The Palisades Fire, which broke out in Pacific Palisades on Monday, started in a backyard. The fire is still burning, destroying countless homes and forcing thousands to evacuate, prompting new evacuation advisories for Malibu. At least the Eaton Fire near Altadena burned. It covers 2,200 acres and by Wednesday morning was rapidly spreading through hilly neighborhoods, leaving behind a devastating trail of charred homes. Tens of thousands of people have been evacuated. Schools across the region are closed Wednesday, and officials are reminding parents to check with their campus or school district for the latest changes in the situation. Evacuation efforts are repeatedly complicated by a variety of factors. Chaotic traffic situation with limited highway space and narrow roads with large numbers of people trying to escape. Warm winds of up to 90 mph are helping the wildfire spread across the Los Angeles metropolitan area and will continue to burn through at least Thursday. A third fire, the Hearst Fire burning in Sylmar, prompted evacuation orders.
