Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has rebuked President-elect Trump for saying he plans to rename the Gulf of Mexico, saying she is considering a new name for the United States.
“Mexican-American. That’s good,” Sheinbaum quipped Wednesday during a press conference in Mexico City, according to Reuters.
Sheinbaum cited the 1607 map at a press conference, which was also attended by Jose Alfonso Suárez del Real, Mexico’s former culture minister.
“In fact, Mexican America has been recognized as a name for the entire northern part of the (American) continent since the 17th century,” Suárez del Real said, pointing to a map.

Sheinbaum’s remarks come as President Trump held a press conference on Tuesday where he made a series of announcements and further teased the incoming second administration, including saying he planned to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico. It is something that
“We have a huge deficit with Mexico and we support Mexico a lot. They are essentially run by cartels and we can’t allow that to happen because Mexico really We’re in trouble, we’re in a dire situation. It’s a very dangerous place,” Trump said at a news conference.

“We’re going to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, which has a beautiful ring. It covers a lot of territory,” President Trump said Tuesday. “American Gulf. What a beautiful name. And it’s appropriate.”

The Gulf of Mexico is a partially enclosed ocean that borders states such as Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida, Mexico, and northwestern Cuba. President Trump did not elaborate on when or how he would rename the bodies of water. Instead, he shifted gears to America’s immigration issues under President Biden.

Sheinbaum pushed back on President Trump’s comments that Mexico is essentially “run by cartels,” saying the people are in charge of the country.
Sheinbaum added at the press conference that he expects the United States and Mexico to have a “good relationship” during the second Trump administration.
