What you need to know
The city and county of Los Angeles remains under a state of emergency Thursday as destructive fires continue to burn in the region. A red flag warning that was scheduled to expire Thursday has been extended until Friday as Santa Ana winds continue to fan the flames. The fire was slightly extinguished overnight, but firefighters were optimistic they could make progress toward some containment of the fire. All LAUSD schools were closed Thursday due to air pollution impacting areas not directly affected by the fires. Other private schools and other school districts have also closed, and parents are encouraged to check directly with campuses for updates. The largest fire was the Palisades Fire in Pacific Palisades, which destroyed hundreds of buildings. Five deaths were reported. The Eaton Fire is burning near Altadena, northwest of Los Angeles. Additional fires are burning north of Los Angeles in the Hollywood Hills, Sylmar and Acton.
