Human remains were discovered Wednesday night in a Malibu home destroyed by the Palisades Fire, which burned near the Los Angeles County coast.
After receiving a report of a missing person, authorities conducted a welfare check at a home near Pacific Coast Highway and Las Flores Canyon Road.
Details about the person’s identity and cause of death were not immediately available. Sheriff’s deputies were at a residence south of Duke’s restaurant, where only a brick chimney remained. A burnt out station wagon was located on the premises.
The Palisades Fire, which started in the Pacific Palisades area, started Tuesday morning and had grown to more than 17,200 acres by Thursday. The community of approximately 23,000 people is located between the Santa Monica Mountains and the Pacific Ocean. Located approximately 8 miles northwest of Santa Monica and 16 miles east of Malibu, just off the Pacific Coast Highway.
This is the sixth death reported in connection with wildfires in Los Angeles County this week. Five people were reported dead in the Eaton Fire near Altadena, northeast of Los Angeles.
The total number of deaths from the fire is unknown at this time as crews continue to battle the blaze and search burned areas.
