Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna on Thursday announced several measures to increase security in areas evacuated due to devastating fires in the area. More than 20 people have been arrested on suspicion of looting in the past few days.
“The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department has formally requested assistance from the California National Guard for both fires,” Luna said. “They will assist with traffic control and the protection of critical infrastructure.
He added: “By securing additional resources and bringing the National Guard on board, we can send a stronger message and keep people out of the affected areas. That way we can address the already high casualties.” “We will not continue to victimize those who have become victims of violence,” he added.
The sheriff also cited the Palisades Fire and Eaton Fire in Pacific Palisades, saying authorities will implement a 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew “within specific affected areas surrounding the two fire areas.” He said he is working on it. It caught fire in Altadena. He said he hopes to have it in place by Thursday night, but definitely by Friday night.
Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn Berger emphasized that the curfew is not meant to punish residents, but to keep the community safe. She said the curfew was requested by the Altadena City Council.
Berger said at a news conference Thursday that sheriff’s deputies arrested people in the evacuation area.
“I promise you, you will be held accountable,” she said. “Shame on those who are preying on residents during this time of crisis.”
