A group of street vendors harnessed the power of social media to rally the community to help those affected by the Eaton fire.
Hot dog vendors said they were able to raise money to purchase supplies thanks to TikTok and generous donations.
“With the help of TikTok, all of our TikTok viewers sent us donations through CashApp, Zelle, and Venmo. Their donations allow us to purchase all of our materials.” said Jimmy Medina, one of the organizers of the donation drive.
Medina, who also lives in Pasadena, was one of the thousands of people evacuated by the fire.
“I had to evacuate as well and the power was out for 48 hours. So to take my mind off things, I would rather give back to the people who lost their homes in Altadena. I also wanted to give back to those who lost their homes in Altadena. I also want to give back to those who gave me money,” Medina said. “It keeps my mind busy and I’m just happy to be able to give back.”
Medina said the effort received thousands of donations and enthusiastic volunteers gathered outside the Rose Bowl where supplies were being dropped off.
“At the end of the day, all we have is each other,” Medina said. “Humanity, please come together in times like these and be there for each other.”
