In a somber update Saturday night, Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office (DME) officials announced five new deaths related to the Eaton Fire.
This brings the number of lives lost in the Palisades and Eaton fires to 16.
Just four days after the fires first broke out, DME reported five deaths from the Palisades Fire and 11 deaths from the Eaton Fire.
The five new cases reported to DME are still under investigation, but the department said it cannot identify human remains until they are processed at the facility.
According to DME, two of the five new deaths were discovered on January 10. One person was found in the 800 block of East Sacramento Street and the other in the 100 block of West Terrace Street, both in Altadena.
As of 6pm Saturday, both of the above victims are at DME.
The other three dead were found in Altadena on January 11. One person was found in the 3000 block of Krenz Street, one in the 200 block of Wapello Street and one in the 30 block of West Pine Street.
The last three victims are awaiting response from the DME, the ministry reported.
Of the 16 lives lost, the ministry has publicly disclosed only one. Victor Shaw, 66, died while holding a hose and trying to save his home during the Eaton fire, his loved ones said. His family lived there for nearly 55 years.
