The Eaton Fire is one of two major wildfires in Southern California, making it California’s second deadliest wildfire on record, according to Cal Fire.
The fire, which broke out on the night of January 7 near Altadena, burned 14,117 acres of land and more than 7,000 buildings, killing 15 people. The fire is currently 35% contained after a week of activity.
The Eaton Fire is now the second-largest fire in state history, behind the 2018 Camp Fire, which destroyed more than 18,000 structures and burned 153,336 acres. 85 deaths were reported in the Northern California fires near Chico.
Approximately 30 percent of the damage assessment has been completed for the Eaton Fire.
The Palisades Fire, which is also ongoing, has burned 23,713 acres and destroyed 5,000 structures, making it currently the fourth largest fire in state history. The Palisades Fire, which also broke out on the night of Jan. 7, was 17% contained as of Tuesday afternoon.
As of Monday, 24 deaths had been reported in the Los Angeles County fires.
The cause of the fire has not been determined.
