Orange County health officials confirmed Tuesday evening that the coastal waters off Laguna Beach between Treasure Island and Table Rock in Aliso Beach were closed due to a sewage spill.
A break in a sewer main near Laguna Niguel Regional Park spilled about 465,000 gallons of sewage, according to the Orange County Health Department and Department of Environmental Health. An unidentified portion of that sewage seeped onto nearby beaches.
Although the sewage pipe damage has since been repaired, beaches in the area remain closed to activities such as swimming, surfing and diving. Orange County officials say the waters will remain closed until conditions improve.
Orange County Supervisor Katrina Foley issued a statement saying, “We urge OC residents, visitors, and tourists to heed the warnings of public health experts and close Laguna while @ochealth conducts water quality testing. We urge you to avoid beaches,” Orange County Supervisor Katrina Foley posted on X.
The spill is the second to hit the county in recent months.
In December, the coastal area around Salt Creek in Dana Point was closed after 3,375 gallons of sewage spilled into the ocean.
Again, the cause was a broken sewage pipe.
