Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom will temporarily raise the American flag aloft at the state Capitol for his inauguration next week and join some Republican governors, Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson and others in making the decision.

Newsom’s news office confirmed the decision to Fox News Digital on Wednesday night.

Following the passing of former President Jimmy Carter on December 29, 2024, flags are being flown at half-staff at U.S. Capitols and statehouses across the United States, in accordance with tradition.

The flag, which was temporarily flown to its maximum capacity, will return to half-staff on Jan. 21 for the remainder of the 30-day mourning period that ends on Jan. 28, eight days after President-elect Donald Trump’s swearing-in.

As of Thursday morning, Newsom is the only Democratic governor to issue this order as Southern California is ravaged by devastating wildfires.

Recently, Governor Brad Little of Idaho, Governor Kelly Armstrong of North Dakota, Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida, Governor Kay Ivey of Alabama, Governor Bill Lee of Tennessee, and Iowa Governor Governor Kim Reynolds and Texas Governor Greg Abbott have made similar decisions. One of them is a Republican.

House Speaker Johnson also ordered the flag to be flown at the U.S. Capitol for President Trump’s inauguration on Jan. 20.

President Trump told Truth Social on January 3, “Democrats are all “blind” to the possibility that our grand American flag may be flown at half-staff on my inauguration. ” he wrote. In fact, they don’t love our country and only care about themselves. ”

“Look at what they’ve done to once great America for the past four years. An utter mess! Either way, with the death of President Jimmy Carter, the flag may be raised for the first time on Inauguration Day. “Future presidents should fly their flags at half-staff,” he continued. “No one wants to see this, and no American will be happy about this. Let’s see what happens. Let’s make America great again!”

The flag was flown at half-staff when former President Richard Nixon was sworn into office for a second term in 1973, after former President Richard Nixon ordered the flag to be lowered following the death of former President Truman.

Fox News Digital’s Landon Mion contributed to this report.
