Democratic Sen. Maisie Hirono of Hawaii faced ridicule on social media Thursday over her opening question during Interior Secretary nominee Doug Burgum’s confirmation hearing.
“As part of my responsibility to ensure the suitability of candidates on my committee, I first ask the following two questions,” Hirono told Burkum on Thursday. “First, since you became a legal adult, have you ever made any unwanted demands for sexual favors, or engaged in verbal or physical harassment or violence of a sexual nature? ”
“No, Senator, I didn’t hear that,” Mr. Burgum replied.
“Have you ever received any disciplinary action or entered into any settlements related to this type of conduct?” Hirono then asked.

“Not yet,” Burgum said.
Hirono has asked similar opening questions to several other candidates in the past, including defense secretary nominee Pete Hegseth and attorney general nominee Pam Bondi, and has taken to social media over the question. was widely criticized by conservatives.

“The more I hear Maisie Hirono ask cabinet candidates if they’ve ever sexually assaulted someone, the more I think she’s guilty herself,” conservative comedian Tim Young wrote on X.
Henry Rogers, the Daily Caller’s chief national correspondent, said Hirono had gone “out of his mind” about X.
Hirono’s office did not respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.
