Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has announced that the Laken Riley Act, an anti-illegal immigration bill expected to be sent to President-elect Trump’s desk in the coming weeks, will require the detention of an additional 60,000 people. He told lawmakers it would cost $3 billion. bed.

In a letter obtained by Fox, ICE says it has identified tens of thousands of illegal immigrants who meet arrest criteria on both detention and non-detention registers. The country’s Enforcement Elimination Operations (ERO) said it estimates the number of illegal immigrants who meet the criteria listed in the national registry to be over 60,000. The letter was first reported by Politico.
“Because the Laken Riley Act requires ERO to immediately detain these noncitizens, ERO will need at least 64,000 additional detention beds, which does not exceed its detention capacity. It does not take into account other immigration enforcement obligations that may require enhancement.”

ICE estimates that increasing its capacity will require approximately $3.2 billion in increased funding. It also estimates that 10 new Mobile Crisis Assistance Teams (MCATs) and headquarters law enforcement officers will be needed in eight field offices, and nearly $15 million more in associated equipment.
In particular, ERO states that it currently has the powers to meet the requirements of the Act and that no additional powers are needed.
The agency warned that tens of thousands of illegal immigrants may have to be released if additional bed space is not secured.

“…[I]If additional funding is not received and ICE remains at its current bed capacity, the agency will not have sufficient detention capacity to handle the immediate arrest and detention of noncitizens convicted of crimes or charged with property crimes. ”, the report states. The report cited ICE staffing challenges and sanctuary city challenges as implementation challenges, and said “a complicating factor is the lack of cooperation from ICE’s state and local law enforcement partners.”
This is not the first time ICE has sounded the alarm about its funding levels, with its 2024 report noting that it is already underfunded for its existing responsibilities.

President-elect Trump has promised to launch a mass deportation operation with ICE as the operating agency. Republicans in Congress are preparing to make sweeping changes to funding through the budget reconciliation process. Border security and domestic enforcement are likely to be top priorities for Republicans, given the importance of the issue in the 2024 election.
