A Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy is recalling his home destroyed in the Eaton Fire in Altadena last week.
Colin Davis allowed NBC4 to walk with him Thursday as he sifted through the ashes left in his East Altadena Drive home after the fire.
Davis is assisting the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department with search and rescue operations. He said he left his home the night of the fire last Tuesday in preparation for what would be needed.
“When your team sends you a page, you automatically know you have to respond,” Davis says.
Davis shared several videos from last Wednesday showing him returning to his home to find the fire still burning. He also shared photos of what his home and several other homes on the property looked like before the Eaton fire.
“When I left home, I didn’t know why, but I wanted to go back,” he said.
Davis told NBC4 she is grateful for the donations, interest and concern from family, friends and strangers.
“Our natural job is to help others,” he said. “So it was really difficult to get people to help.”
Focused on search and rescue, Davis feels saved and continues to be inspired by the resiliency of the Altadena community.
“We want to rebuild something. I’ve lived in this town for 20 years,” Davis said. “You know, I’ve only lived here for a year and it’s really been a beautiful place to live. The people are great and I want the best for them.”
