Los Angeles area firefighters have made significant progress over the past week in battling the deadly Palisades and Eaton fires, but evacuation orders for areas affected by the fires remain in place as the weekend begins. are.
Evacuation orders for some areas affected by the Palisades fire were lifted Thursday, but some may have to wait more than a week before returning to their homes.
“Search and rescue operations continue,” Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said Thursday morning. “There is an area where we are holding a potential deceased victim. Please wait.”
As of Friday morning, the Palisades Fire was 23,700 acres and 31% contained, more than a week after it started in the city’s Pacific Palisades neighborhood. The Eaton Fire, which destroyed parts of Altadena and Pasadena, has taken up 65% of the 14,100-acre site.
The red flag warning for much of the region expired earlier this week, and the fires are being brought under control, in part because winds have eased.
Evacuation orders remained in effect for the Pacific Palisades area and a large area to the west, including areas such as Topanga State Park, Tuna Canyon Park, Big Rock and Las Flores.
Parts of Los Angeles’ Brentwood neighborhood and eastern Malibu are also still under evacuation orders due to the Palisades Fire, and much of Malibu and the remainder of Brentwood are under evacuation orders.
Much of Altadena remains under evacuation orders due to the Eaton Fire, with evacuation advisories in place for small residential areas west of the Lincoln Villa neighborhood and east of Quinelloa Mesa.
