President-elect Trump announced Saturday that he has nominated former Tennessee Department of Education Secretary Penny Schwinn to serve as deputy secretary of education.
While in Tennessee, Schwinn oversaw the department’s response to the coronavirus pandemic at the direction of Gov. Bill Lee.has introduced a school voucher program and overhauled the state’s school funding formula, the Associated Press reported.

Mr. Schwinn previously worked for the Texas Education Agency as Deputy Commissioner for Standards and Engagement, Deputy Commissioner for Special Populations and Oversight, and Principal Deputy Commissioner for Academics.
She also served as Assistant Secretary of Education for the State of Delaware.

President Trump congratulated Schwinn on Saturday in a post on Truth Social.
President Trump said, “Penny, a former teacher herself, became the charter school’s founding principal. She believes in the power of school choice and is committed to bringing education back to the United States and delivering the American Dream to the next generation. It’s because I’m working hard,” he wrote. “Congratulations to Penny and her wonderful family!”

Schwinn holds a master’s degree from Johns Hopkins University and a Ph.D. Originally from Claremont.
