Firefighters strengthened containment lines around the Palisades and Eaton fires in Los Angeles County over the weekend as the weather cleared.
The deadly fires, two of California’s most destructive fires on record, broke out on January 7, when storms in Santa Ana made fire danger extremely high. More than 27 people have been reported dead in the fires, which burned in the Pacific Palisades area on the Los Angeles County coast and the Altadena area northeast of Los Angeles.
The fire destroyed at least 14,362 structures, including homes and businesses.
As of Monday morning, containment of the 14,000-acre Eaton Fire had grown to 87 percent. Helicopters dropping water doused hot spots near Winters Creek, Mount Row and Mount Wilson over the weekend.
The Palisades Fire was 23,700 acres and 59 percent contained Monday morning.
Evacuation orders were lifted in many areas over the weekend. Due to the safety shutdown, some homes are without electricity or gas.
A night curfew remains in place from 6pm to 6am in the mandatory evacuation areas. Only firefighters, law enforcement, and utility workers are permitted in these zones.
A red flag warning has been in effect since early this week, indicating high fire danger for parts of Los Angeles and Ventura counties.
