The Laken Riley Act is expected to be returned to the House after the Senate passes a revised version on Monday night.
The bill is expected to be one of the first bills sent to President Trump’s desk after passing the 60-vote filibuster threshold twice this month.
The bill, introduced in the new Congress by Sen. Katie Britt (R-Ala.) in the Senate and Rep. Mike Collins (R-Ga.) in the House, names a 22-year-old Augusta University nursing student. It was named after. He was found dead on the University of Georgia campus in February.

Jose Ibarra, a 26-year-old illegal immigrant, was found guilty on 10 charges, including felony murder. He initially pleaded not guilty but was ultimately sentenced to life in prison without parole in November.
The measure would require ICE to arrest illegal immigrants who commit crimes such as theft, robbery, and shoplifting and detain them until they are deported. Under the law, states would also have the right to bring civil lawsuits against members of the federal government who fail to enforce immigration laws.

A Republican amendment was added in the Senate last week that would add assaults on law enforcement officers to the list of crimes that trigger ICE detention. The Senate is scheduled to vote Monday afternoon on whether to add Sara’s Law as an amendment. The bill, sponsored by Sen. Joni Ernst (R-Iowa), would require ICE to detain undocumented immigrants charged with killing or seriously injuring another person.
A final vote on the immigration bill is expected to take place in the Senate around 6 p.m.
