Small fires were scattered across Southern California amid strong winds that were expected to peak on Tuesday.
An “extremely dangerous conditions” warning for extreme wind gusts that began Monday is scheduled to last until 10 a.m. Tuesday for parts of Los Angeles County and much of Ventura County, the National Weather Service’s warning for the season. Gusts of up to 50 mph to 70 mph are possible along the coast and valleys, with sustained winds expected to be between 25 mph and 40 mph. Momentary gusts of up to 160 mph are possible in mountainous and hilly areas, but sustained winds are expected to be in the 30 to 50 mph range.
Southland hasn’t had much rain in months, so the landscape remains at risk of fire.
Los Angeles police arrested a man after a small wildfire broke out beneath the Griffith Park Observatory on Monday. According to police sources, a witness saw the man setting fire nearby. No other details were available.
The fire was called around 1 p.m. and burned four acres, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. Crews rushed to the area south of Griffith Observatory as plumes of black smoke were visible from Hollywood and surrounding areas.
The fire was quickly extinguished after helicopters sprayed water from the air. There was no damage to the building.
Multiple fires were reported in San Diego County Tuesday morning.
One in Poway burned three acres before being shut down. Another fire near Para was also extinguished.
Near Bonsell, the Lilac Fire burned more than 80 acres and forced evacuations.
The fire started near Old Highway 395 and Lilac Road.
Meanwhile, crews who have battled two of California’s deadliest and most destructive fires in years continued to make headway.
The Palisades Fire remained at 23,713 acres over the weekend, but the fire rate was 63% contained Monday night, up from 39% on Friday.
The Eaton Fire remained at just over 14,000 acres, but containment had increased from 65% on Friday to 87% as of Monday night.
