SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Firefighters are working to extinguish a wildfire that broke out Tuesday afternoon off Friars Road near Fashion Valley.
The wildfire was first reported just after noon Tuesday in the 7000 block of Friars Road near Fashion Valley Mall and nearby homes.
Dozens of firefighters, including San Diego Fire and Rescue and the city of Poway, were at the scene Tuesday afternoon, and air support was also requested.
The San Diego Fire and Rescue Department announced that at 1 p.m. firefighters were rapidly extinguishing the Friars Fire and asking the public to avoid Friars Road west of SR-163.
Fire crews were able to contain the fire to about 3 acres by 1:30 p.m. and will remain on scene for several hours to extinguish hot spots.
City Council member Raul Campillo posted on X that the fire may have caused minor damage to the apartment, but there was no loss of structure.

A temporary evacuation site has been set up in the parking lot on the west side of Snapdragon Stadium.
Evacuation Advisory for Fashion Valley Mall Fire on January 21, 2025 (San Diego County)
SkyFOX/KUSI in the SKY was on top of the fire Tuesday afternoon and smoke could be seen coming up the hillside.
The San Diego County Department of Education’s Linda Vista Campus and Linda Vista Innovation Center were affected by the evacuation and classes are closed until the evacuation is lifted.
A Sig Alert has been issued for the northbound and southbound ramps from State Route 163 to Friars Road due to the fire. Caltrans says those ramps will remain closed until further notice.
SDG&E’s power outage map shows widespread power outages in the area that began just after noon Tuesday. As of 12:30 p.m., about 3,000 people were without power.
