The Republican Laken-Reilly Act is scheduled to go to President Donald Trump’s desk, making it the first bill signed into law by the party after the party retakes the House and Senate and the White House.
The House passed the bill Wednesday by a vote of 263 to 156, marking the second time the House has introduced the bill this month.
The bill passed the House of Representatives on January 7th by a vote of 264-159. Every voting Republican supported the bill, as did 48 Democrats. This is two more people than the most recent vote.

The Republican-controlled Senate also passed the bill on a bipartisan vote of 64-35, which would deport undocumented immigrants who assault police officers or cause death or “serious injury” to others. Added.
The original bill would have directed Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents to detain undocumented immigrants accused of theft-related crimes. It would also allow states to sue the Department of Homeland Security for harm caused to their citizens by illegal immigration.
A majority of Democrats opposed the bill, arguing that it would be a slippery slope to allow the deportation of people who have been charged but not convicted of a crime. But supporters of the bill point out that people here illegally are already violating U.S. law.

But it’s notable that more Democrats supported the bill when it passed the House this month than when it first came up for a vote in 2024. This is a marked difference from last year, when the bill was not even debated in the Senate, which had a Democratic majority at the time. Bill for vote.
When asked about growing support from the left, Rep. Mike Collins (R-Ga.), the bill’s sponsor, told Fox News Digital: “Nothing will happen in this town until the American people demand it.” spoke.

Republican lawmakers are working to fulfill President Trump’s promises amid a flurry of executive orders to crack down on illegal immigration and border security. They cast the Laken-Reilly Act as the first bill to be signed by President Trump, reflecting an effort to make his agenda permanent.

The bill is named after a nursing student who was killed by an illegal immigrant while jogging on the University of Georgia campus.
Jose Ybarra, who was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Laken Riley, had previously been arrested but never taken into ICE custody.
