What began as a peaceful protest was a teenager in Los Angeles on Friday after a group of students left school for the fourth day to protest immigration policies set out by President Donald Trump. I was covered in blood when I was stabbed.
Footage shot by Sky5 in downtown LA showed at least one of the brawls that had the aftermath of a stabbing wound in front of city hall, including a bloody victim.
“I came to protest, and there was a man who came out who wasn’t even part of the protest, and just shank the guy,” an eyewitness named Will told KTLA. “I got everything on the camera and walked, I put pressure on him, cut my shirt off and wrapped it around him to stop the bleeding.”
By 1:49pm, LAPD had confirmed that a Hispanic man had been stabbed at a grand park outside city hall. He was taken to a local hospital where he remained in danger Friday evening.
Around 5:20pm, LAPD revealed that the victim was a 17-year-old man. Authorities did not immediately confirm whether he was a student.
It was not immediately clear whether other individuals involved in the brawl were students or legal adults.
Rich Prickett of KTLA estimated that hundreds were outside city hall around 1:30pm. It consists primarily of groups of students who came out of different schools in Los Angeles on Fridays. The demonstration was cleared by 1:50pm, police said.
As of 4pm on Friday, KTLA’s Rachel Menithov reported that police were still closing the Spring Street area in front of city hall where warning tapes were drawn around the crime scene.
“The organizers were telling people beyond the microphone. Everyone went home, they’re back on another day, we’re going to reorganize and come back for immigration rights,” Maria said. “The other witness, Rivera Cummins,” said.
On Friday evening, LAPD advised the public to avoid the area, saying, “Spring Street will be closed from Temple Street to 1st Avenue, and investigators gather evidence and find witnesses.”
Since his first day in office, Trump has signed the gust of executive orders, giving the military a major presence in the US military, and cutting restrictions that he previously opposed immigration and customs enforcement.
Under Trump’s new order, ICE is now permitted to target immigrants in sensitive places such as schools and churches for arrests or potential deportation.
