A group of transgender people is challenging new policies from the Trump administration that prevents passports from being issued with sexual designations that do not match the biological sex of the applicant at birth.
Seven people represented by the American Civil Liberties Union have filed a lawsuit alleging that the policy violates privacy and the right to the First Amendment. In 2022, the Department of State allowed passport applicants to choose M, F or X for sex.

In a statement released by the ACLU, one of the plaintiffs, Reid Solomon-Lane, said he is living his adult life as a man.
“Everyone in my personal and professional life knows me as a man, and strangers on the streets who have met me will see me as a man,” Solomon Lane said. “Now, as a three-married father, Trump’s executive order and subsequent passport policies threaten life with safety and ease.
“If my passport reflects sexual designations that contradict who I am, I am forced to expel each time I use my passport for travel or identification, and I am in the safety of my family and the safety of my safety. It will pose a risk.
