Local governments are urging residents to be vigilant in light of the recent rise in “distraction theft” across SOCAL.
A media release from the Torrance Police Department says criminals are using “deceitful tactics” to spit out theft while stealing victims’ attention.

“Distraction theft usually involves suspects creating scenarios that distract the victim and allowing them or their accomplices to steal personal and valuables,” Torrance police said. . “Popular tactics include asking for instructions, spilling drinks, and creating scenes that require assistance.”
Officials provided four steps for residents to protect themselves.
Be careful: Always be careful around you and the people around you, especially in crowded places. And don’t leave valuables unattended. Use technology for a while. Monitor your belongings using anti-theft devices or security apps
Anyone who witnesses suspicious behavior or considers himself a victim of distracted theft or robbery should call the police.
“We are encouraging residents to look for each other,” the Torrance Police Department said. “We can work together to create a safer community… and we can stay safe and vigilant.”
