Irvine, CA (KTLA) – For the first time, a fire detection system invented by a teenager on Newport Beach will be tested in real life situations.
The 17-year-old Ryan Honor System he has developed for five years will be deployed near the 133 and 405 highways in Irvine.
The Honorary Invention began as a Science Fair Project and grew into a company known as Sensory AI. The system uses three sensors to detect flames, smoke and heat. Recently upgraded with an infrared camera.
This first test will contact the firefighter using a single device with smoke sensors, infrared cameras and cellular features.
“This is very exciting because I’ve been working on this for five years and have been testing after the test to make sure everything works,” the honor said.
The location of deployment was selected with support from the Orange County Fire Department (OCFA) and the City of Irvine. Honor has not been paid yet, but we hope that a successful test will lead to a contract.
OCFA has confirmed continued support for Honary’s project, but the City of Irvine has not yet responded.
If the tests work, more devices and mesh networks will be added over time to improve fire detection and response.
