The name change from the “Gulf of Mexico” to the “Gulf of America” began to unfold across the United States on Monday, just a month after President Donald Trump announced his intention to Americanize the name.

On January 7th, Trump announced that the Gulf of Mexico would be given a new name and signed an executive order that finalizes the decision a few weeks later.
“We’re going to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the US Gulf. This has a beautiful ring. It covers a lot of territory,” Trump said Tuesday. “American Bay. What a beautiful name. That’s appropriate.”
The decision was often received by social media users on Monday, and the changes began to notice Google Maps implementing the changes.
“Google Maps finally recognize the US Gulf!” wrote one X user. “Isn’t it beautiful?”
“I hate Google, but TBH, my bay says the US Bay has zoomed all the way,” another said. “And the boy is brilliant.”

“Google maps the bow to the cards,” another commentator wrote.
The change comes after Trump signed a declaration on Sunday declaring February 9th as “American Gulf Day.”
Trump was flying through the waters on his way to Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans when he signed the Presidential Order.
“Air Force 1 is currently located in the first international waters in history flying through the recently renamed US Gulf,” the White House wrote in the X-Post.
In his declaration, Trump wrote, “part as stated in that order.”[t]Formerly known as the Gulf of Mexico, he has long been an integral asset and an indelible part of America for a once-growing country. ”

Google previously confirmed that it intended to update the Gulf name according to local governments.

“I’ve received some questions about naming within Google Maps,” Google said in an X post. “There’s a long-standing practice of applying name changes when updated with official government sources. Everyone in the world sees both names. That’s true here too.”
