The Altadena home, destroyed by Eton Fire, is for sale after last month’s offer was accepted.
The West Calaveras Street lot was once a rental property and sold for $550,000, a asking price and $100,000 in all cash.
Once Altadena homeowners understand their next steps, one community member says they hope that Altadena’s heritage can be preserved in the reconstruction process.
Freddy Sayegh, community organizer for “Altadena Not Sale” and “Altadena Strong,” wants to preserve the history of the community’s generation.
“We want to rebuild our community,” says Sayegh. “We just want what we had.”
“Altadena is not for sale!” can be seen in the community yard.
Authorities will set up a boundary in Altadena on Friday night to stop looters who may lurk in the area. Darsha Phillips is reporting NBC4 News on February 7, 2025 at 11pm.
Sayegh was born and raised in Altadena, and his family lost multiple homes on Eaton Fire.
“What we don’t want to see is the massive belt movement of Altadena residents,” Sayegh said. “What we don’t want is for people to buy, build, and sell it for profit.”
Sayegh had held events that included a recent City Hall that aimed to integrate the community in the reconstruction process.
Altadena has the most concentrated African American homeownership.
“Our fear is merely a fact that we have caused a natural disaster, and we should drive these people away and have a totally different community come and change the demographics and composition of this historic community. ” Sayegh says.
He calls Altadena a land of opportunity and doesn’t want to forget it.
“I don’t want to forget about us for the rest of the world,” Sayegh said. “We just don’t want to stay and hide.”
Brock Harris, a real estate agent who represented the seller, said they had received dozens of offers.
“We probably got 20 calls a day,” Harris said.
“After listing this property, we have received a lot of calls from other homeowners who own vacant lots who just look at the options and wonder what they should do. .”
The transaction is expected to close next week.
