(The Hill) – Google Maps users will see the “American Gulf” in waters that were once labeled “Gulf of Mexico.”
Mexican users still see the name “Gulf of Mexico” and other users around the world will see both names with the word “Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America).”
The change follows President Trump’s first day of office on January 20th, and will rename the Gulf Coast to include the American name. The executive order directed the interior department to take all necessary steps to make the changes official.
On January 24th, the Ministry of Home Affairs issued a press release stating, “The Gulf of Mexico will now be officially known as the Gulf of America.”
The Department is working “quickly” to update the names of these features of the US Geographic Name Information System (GNIS), with changes being “instantly to federal use.” “It’s valid.”
Shortly afterwards, Google said it would officially change the name change for US-based Google Maps users when their names are updated in GNIS.
Google said Monday that GNIS officials had updated their names to “American Bay.”
“We announced it two weeks ago and have started rolling out changes to reflect this update as it is consistent with years of practice,” Google said in a blog post.
Trump officially created “American Gulf Day” on February 9th. He also flew through the bay that day to admit the name change of the statement.
“Today is my first visit to the Gulf of America since I changed my name,” Trump said in a statement Sunday. “As my administration restores America’s pride in the history of American greatness, it is fitting and appropriate for our great nations to come together to commemorate this important opportunity and the renaming of the Gulf of America.”
