One of the only surviving buildings that spare in the fire in the neighbouring Palisade of that same name, serves as a resource hub for residents affected by the deadly flames.
American Legion Post 283 has been transformed into the “Palisades Wildfire Community Support Center” starting Wednesday. There, residents will have access to the Red Cross, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
Additionally, there is free advice from a group of insurance professionals and lawyers, access to mental health support, and clergy from churches and temples.
“There’s a lot of tears coming to this building,” said Jim Craig, an Army veteran who coordinates the resource hub. “We’re here to provide information, but this is where you can come…that’s this. We’re here to have a hug, we’re We’re here to move on, and the flag is what we’re going to gather.”
Craig is one of hundreds of residents who lost their homes in the Palisade fire. As he tackles his loss and navigates his next move, he will also lead residents in the same situation as he coordinates the center.
“Knowledge is important, tools are important, but it’s really important to be with others who understand what you’re going through because other people in other countries don’t think about it. That’s it,” he said.
Craig said the support center will provide appropriate PPE and bodysuits so residents can protect what remains if they return home or anything else. He asks residents to pick up the equipment in advance.
“It’s like an endless military mission,” Craig said. “I’ve been in the Army for 30 years and thought I’d seen the worst.”
The center will open from 9am to 5pm starting Wednesday and will be open on its Monday-Saturday schedule. American Legion Post 283 is located at 15247 La Cruz Ave. in Pacific Palisades.
Anyone wishing to donate to residents affected by the fire can bring their clothing and supplies to the donation center at 5450 S. Slauson Ave. in Culver City.
